After an interesting morning, Gabby was singing 🎶 My boyfriend's back 🎶 shortly before 9 am. (V3) Earlier in the morning around 7 am there was another visitor that Gabby seemed calm with but he didn't stay long enough to get good looks at him. Then shortly before 8 am, the visitor we believe was here two nights ago (black spot top of head) showed up and Gabby was not happy - she vocalized the entire time until he flew off! Then shortly before 9 am, V3 arrived - the telltale mark below his right nare was a happy sight to see. Gabby immediately calmed down after his arrival! This has been a fascinating study of how eagles eventually select a mate - and it is by no means settled yet! Just amazing how Gabby seems calm with some but wants no part of others near her or her nest. 01-08-2023

Apparently the stream of visitors has begun anew. It appears as if we had a new one yesterday afternoon and a new one this morning. We are going through all of our screenshots of previous visitors, and while there are some similarities, there are also some differences. At this point it seems to make no sense trying to catalogue each one when they are here one day and gone the next. The first screenshot is the Jan 6th visitor who has some similarities to V9, but not all the markers are the same. This eagle spent the night perched with Gabby. The second screenshot is from a visitor that arrived with Gabby back to the nest this morning, Jan 7th, shortly after she flew off with last night's visitor! Are you confused yet? We sure are! 🤣🤣🤣

Baby steps! Looks like V3 figured out he should bring a food gift while Gabby is actually at the nest - but he isn't accustomed to her "enthusiasm" over food gifts. She might have scared him a wee bit and he forgot to leave the squirrel!

Silly to have to even post this, but there have more than a few inquiries earlier today! Let's stop the rumors before they start! Gabby is not missing. She was at the nest yesterday and flew off shortly after 6 pm last night (Fri Dec 30th). Less than 24 hours ago!!! Eagles do not spend all their time at the nest when there are no eggs or eaglets to protect. It is normal behavior for them to be at the nest alot, or sporadically or only every few days! In other words - there is no "norm". It is possible that we are seeing V3 so often at the nest because he is trying to stake his claim on the nest. This is Gabby's nest - she does not need to stake a claim - she comes and goes as she feels appropriate. ❤️ No worries ❤️

There have been a few folks questioning whether this is actually V3 who has returned because they say feather markings aren't identical. As explained in last night's chat, feather markings can look different based on angles, whether the feathers are fanned out or not, eagle is puffed up or sporting the sleek look. One thing that doesn't change - at least until it heals is an injury. V3 showed up on December 10th with a fresh gash at the top of his left foot (pic on upper left). Going clockwise, the next 3 pics are from Dec 26, Dec 27 and Dec 26 showing the gash, now healing in the exact same area of upper left foot. It appears V3 incurred a few talon punctures as well during his absence from the nest. These also appear to be healing nicely.

The eagle we believe to be V3 has now spent the last 3 nights perched at the nest with Gabby and has been a constant at the nest the past two days. He even brought a squirrel to the nest yesterday - he seemed to be waiting for Gabby but eventually gave in and started eating. Not wise to leave food on a nest, especially unattended! A good hunter and smart as well! He brought a fish the day before, but Gabby missed that gift too. Hopefully, their timing will improve. This morning both worked in the nest together for a bit. Whether or not Gabby selects this eagle as a mate remains to be seen, but he seems to be checking all the boxes. It has been nice to see Gabby have a few nights of peaceful sleep and some companionship - even if at wing's length for the time being. ❤️

Small dark marks on either side of head, tail markings, talon marks in feet - notably a healing gash at the top of the left foot that was noted on previous visit and the fact that he brought a fish to the nest! Of all the visitors, V3 was the only one that brought food to the nest.

They're starting to arrive in bunches! 3 new eagles this evening. V9 looks remarkably like Samson with a small dot in his eye - however, he doesn't have a flattened toe and his tail is totally different from Samson's tail. We were hopeful but thanks to our awesome cam ops, we were able to get great closeups for necessary identification markers. V9 is not Samson. These 3 new eagles are all different from the previous 6!

After a whirlwind day with V4 and V5 visiting a fe

After a whirlwind day with V4 and V5 visiting a few times, Gabby returned to the nest right about 5 pm and chased them away. V4 returned a few minutes later and perched close to Gabby. So far she is tolerating him. We believe V4 is approx. 4 years old and a male. While only 4, nothing is impossible - Lady Independence from the Smoky Mountain nest successfully clutched at 3 years of age. We just sit back and observe.
